Newsline Local respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how Newsline Local (“Newsline Local,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you visit newslinelocal.com, communicate with us, or otherwise use a website, email, or service that links to this Policy (collectively, the “Services”).
This Policy also describes the choices and rights that may be available to you. It does not apply to websites, applications, or services operated by other organizations, even when they are linked to or embedded in our Services.
At a glance
- We collect information you choose to give us, such as your email address and the information you provide when you contact us.
- We and the companies that help operate our Services may automatically receive technical and usage information when you visit the site or interact with an email.
- We use information to publish and deliver our journalism, operate and improve the Services, communicate with readers, understand audience engagement, maintain security, and support our business.
- We do not sell personal information for money. Some disclosures involving advertising or analytics technology may be considered a “sale,” “sharing,” or targeted advertising under certain state privacy laws, and residents of those states may have the right to opt out.
The sections below provide the complete Policy.
1. Information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you use the Services.
Information you provide
We may collect information that you provide directly to us, including:
- Communications, including information you provide when you contact us, submit a news tip, request support, or communicate with our staff;
- Advertising or business inquiries, such as your name, organization, job title, contact information, and the contents of your inquiry.
Please do not submit sensitive personal information unless it is necessary for a specific interaction and you understand how it may be used. If you send us a confidential news tip or source material, any journalistic handling of that information may also be governed by our editorial practices and applicable law.
Information collected automatically
When you use the Services, we and our service providers may automatically collect information such as:
- IP address and approximate location derived from it;
- browser type, device type, operating system, language, and device or advertising identifiers;
- pages and articles viewed, links clicked, referring and exit pages, search terms, dates and times of access, and other interactions with the Services;
- information about cookies, pixels, local storage, software development kits, and similar technologies; and
- diagnostic, security, fraud-prevention, and error-reporting information.
Information from other sources
We may receive information from service providers, analytics companies, advertising partners, social networks, public sources, business partners, and other organizations. For example, if you follow a link to Newsline Local from another website or interact with our content through a social platform, we may receive information about that interaction in accordance with the other service’s privacy settings and policies.
We may combine information from these sources with other information we hold.
2. Cookies and similar technologies
We and companies that support the Services may use cookies, pixels, tags, local storage, and similar technologies. These technologies may be used to:
- keep the site functioning and secure;
- remember settings and preferences;
- measure traffic, readership, and engagement;
- understand how articles and features perform;
- diagnose errors and improve the Services;
- prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access; and
- deliver, personalize, and measure advertising, where applicable.
Some technologies are placed by third parties whose content or services appear on our site, such as analytics providers, advertising partners, video or audio players, social-media features, or other embedded content. Those third parties may collect information about your activity over time and across different websites or services, subject to their own privacy policies.
You can usually remove or reject cookies through your browser settings. If a cookie-preference tool is available on our site, you may also use it to manage nonessential cookies. Blocking certain technologies may affect how the Services function.
Where required by applicable law, we will request consent before using nonessential cookies or similar technologies. We will also honor legally recognized opt-out preference signals, such as Global Privacy Control, where required.
3. How we use information
We may use information to:
- provide, operate, maintain, and secure the Services;
- display articles and other editorial content;
- respond to questions, news tips, requests, and other communications;
- personalize content and remember preferences;
- analyze readership, traffic, and engagement and improve our journalism, design, and technology;
- offer, select, deliver, and measure advertising and sponsorships;
- detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, security incidents, misuse, and violations of our terms;
- protect the rights, safety, and property of Newsline Local, our readers, our personnel, and others;
- comply with law, enforce agreements, and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims; and
- carry out another purpose disclosed to you when the information is collected or with your consent.
We may use information that has been aggregated or deidentified so that it cannot reasonably be linked to you. We may use and disclose such information for any lawful purpose and will not attempt to reidentify it except as permitted by law.
4. How we disclose information
We may disclose personal information in the following circumstances:
Service providers
We may provide information to companies that perform services for us, such as website hosting, content delivery, email correspondence, analytics, customer support, security, fraud prevention, data storage, advertising operations, and professional advice. These providers may use personal information only as permitted by their agreements with us and applicable law.
Advertising, analytics, and business partners
We may disclose identifiers, device information, and usage information to analytics providers, advertisers, advertising technology companies, sponsors, and other business partners. They may use this information to measure audiences and campaigns, select or personalize advertisements, or provide related services.
We do not sell personal information for money. However, some privacy laws define “sale,” “sharing,” or targeted advertising broadly enough to include certain advertising or analytics disclosures. Where those laws apply, you may have the right to opt out as described in Section 6.
At your direction or with your consent
We may disclose information when you ask us to do so, consent to the disclosure, or use a feature that makes the disclosure necessary.
Legal, safety, and protective purposes
We may disclose information if we reasonably believe doing so is necessary to comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process, or a valid governmental request; enforce our terms or policies; detect or address fraud or security issues; or protect the rights, property, or safety of Newsline Local, our readers, our personnel, or others.
Business transactions
We may disclose or transfer information as part of a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, sale of assets, or similar transaction, including during related negotiations and due diligence. Any successor’s use of personal information will remain subject to this Policy unless you are notified otherwise.
5. Correspondence and news tips
We receive your email address and any information you include when you contact newslinelocal@gmail.com. We use this information to review and respond to correspondence, investigate tips or corrections, and maintain appropriate records. Our email provider, Google, processes correspondence through Gmail under the applicable service terms and privacy practices.
Ordinary email may not be confidential or secure. If confidentiality is essential, discuss appropriate arrangements before sending sensitive material. Journalistic handling of source material is also subject to editorial practices, applicable law, and any express agreement.
6. Your privacy rights and choices
Depending on where you live and subject to applicable exceptions, you may have the right to:
- confirm whether we process your personal information and access that information;
- correct inaccurate personal information;
- request deletion of personal information;
- obtain a portable copy of certain personal information;
- opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, targeted advertising, or certain profiling;
- withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;
- limit certain uses or disclosures of sensitive personal information; and
- appeal our decision on a privacy request.
To submit a privacy request, email newslinelocal@gmail.com with the subject line Privacy Request. Please identify your state or country of residence and describe your request. We may need to verify your identity before completing it. Verification information will be used only for that purpose.
Where permitted by law, you may use an authorized agent to make a request. We may require proof that you authorized the agent and may ask you to verify your identity directly. We will not discriminate against you for exercising an applicable privacy right.
To opt out of interest-based advertising, you may also use any cookie-preference tool provided on our site, enable a legally recognized browser-based opt-out signal, or use industry tools such as those offered by the Digital Advertising Alliance or Network Advertising Initiative. Your choice may be specific to the browser or device you use, and clearing cookies may require you to renew it.
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” setting. Because there is not a uniform industry standard for responding to that signal, we do not respond to it unless required by law. We do respond to Global Privacy Control and other legally recognized opt-out preference signals where required.
7. Data retention
We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including to provide the Services, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, protect security, and prevent fraud and abuse. Retention periods vary based on the nature of the information, why it was collected, and applicable legal or operational requirements. We may retain aggregated or deidentified information where permitted by law.
8. Data security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Children’s privacy
The Services are intended for a general audience and are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, please contact newslinelocal@gmail.com so we can take appropriate action.
10. Third-party links and embedded content
The Services may link to or display content from third parties, including advertisers, social networks, video or audio platforms, mapping services, and other news or information sources. We do not control those organizations or their privacy practices. Review their privacy policies before providing information to them. A link or embedded feature does not imply that Newsline Local endorses the third party’s privacy practices.
11. Visitors outside the United States
Newsline Local is based in the United States, and information may be processed and stored in the United States and other countries where we or our service providers operate. Those countries may have data-protection laws different from the laws where you live. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers and provide the rights required by applicable law.
If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction that requires a lawful basis for processing, our bases may include performance of a contract, compliance with legal obligations, our legitimate interests, your consent, and protection of vital interests. Our legitimate interests include operating and improving the Services, understanding readership, supporting journalism, securing our systems, and communicating with readers, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy to reflect changes in our practices, technology, Services, or legal obligations. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top. If changes are material, we may provide additional notice, such as a notice on the site or an email when appropriate. We encourage you to review this Policy periodically.
